Why Locals Love Spiros Beach
Spiros Beach is named after the family that has run the beachfront taverna here since the 1970s. Unlike the busier main beach, Spiros maintains a more traditional Greek atmosphere—locals still swim here in the early morning, fishermen moor their boats in the small cove, and the taverna serves dishes that haven't changed in decades. If you want the Paleokastritsa experience without the tour-bus crowds, this is your beach.
The water is exceptionally clear due to the rocky seabed and the cove's natural filtration. Visibility often exceeds 15 meters, making it popular with snorkelers. The beach itself is a mix of fine pebbles and some sandy patches near the water's edge. Trees provide natural shade along the back of the beach, so you can avoid paying for sunbeds if you prefer. It's the kind of place where you'll see the same faces every morning—other travelers who've discovered it and return year after year.
What You'll Find at Spiros Beach
Authentic Taverna
The Spiros family taverna serves traditional Greek dishes—grilled octopus, fresh calamari, Greek salad with real feta. Prices are fair, portions are generous, and the staff remember your name.
Natural Shade
Pine and cypress trees line the back of the beach, providing free shade. Sunbeds and umbrellas are available if you prefer, but many guests just bring a towel and use the trees.
Good Snorkeling
The rocky outcrops on both sides of the cove attract small fish and occasional octopus. Bring your own snorkel gear—the rocks near the edges are the best spots to explore.
Crystal Clear Water
The rocky bottom keeps the water exceptionally transparent. On calm days, you can see the bottom even at 5-6 meters depth. Perfect for snorkeling and underwater photography.
Staying Near Spiros Beach
Spiros Beach is approximately 400 meters from Astacos Studios—a comfortable 5-6 minute walk along the coastal path. This makes it ideal for morning swims before breakfast or late afternoon dips before dinner. The proximity means you can easily go back to your studio to shower, grab lunch, or escape the midday heat, then return to the beach in the late afternoon when the light is golden and the crowds have thinned.
Astacos Studios has been family-run since 1963, so we share the same values as the Spiros Beach taverna: genuine hospitality, fair prices, and treating guests like returning friends rather than transaction numbers. Our studios offer full kitchenettes (perfect for making your own breakfast before a beach day), private balconies, air conditioning, and fast Wi-Fi—but we're close enough to Spiros Beach that you can walk there in flip-flops.
How to Get There from Astacos Studios
Walking (5-6 minutes): Exit our property and follow the coastal path south. You'll pass a small chapel on your right. Continue along the path for another 200 meters until you see the taverna sign for "Spiros." A short path descends directly to the beach. The walk is mostly flat and shaded by trees.
By car (2 minutes): Parking is available near the beach entrance. Spaces are limited—arrive before 10 AM in peak season (July/August) to secure a spot.
By boat: Some boat operators from the main beach can drop you at Spiros Beach on request. This is less common than walking, but available if you're already doing a boat tour of the area.
What to Bring
Snorkel gear: Bring your own mask and fins; the underwater scenery is spectacular
Water shoes: The beach is pebble, not sand, shoes make walking more comfortable
Beach mat or towel: Sunbeds are available for rent (€5-8 per set), but you can also use the natural shade and bring your own towel.
Cash: The taverna accepts cash only. There's an ATM at the main beach (10-minute walk) if needed.
Why Spiros Beach Matters
In an area increasingly dominated by large hotels and organized beaches, Spiros Beach represents something increasingly rare: authenticity without pretense. The Spiros family didn't hire consultants or create an Instagram-friendly brand. They just continued doing what they've always done—serving good food, keeping the beach clean, and treating guests with warmth. For travelers tired of curated experiences and optimized environments, this unpolished genuineness is exactly what they're seeking.
It's the same philosophy we follow at Astacos Studios. We've been here since 1963, long before Paleokastritsa became a tourist destination. We don't claim to be luxury or boutique—we're just a family-run place that offers clean, comfortable studios at fair prices, close enough to beaches like Spiros that you can walk there in minutes. That's the real Corfu. That's what keeps people coming back.
